About Us
About Us It Started With One Ridiculous Word.
Some of the best ideas don’t begin in a boardroom.
They begin around a dinner table with good friends, a bottle of wine, and people laughing so hard they can barely breathe.
That’s exactly how Fuckwhittery was born.
One Dinner. One Word. One Domain.
More than sixteen years ago, Ian and I were having dinner at the home of one of our closest friends and her husband in Toronto.
Sharon, is one of those wonderfully rare people who treats the English language like an artist. Brilliant with grammar, sharp as a tack, and forever inventing words that somehow make perfect sense.
To this day, “Faschnarfus” still makes us cry with laughter.
At some point during dinner she wandered back into the room after missing part of the conversation, looked at us and asked, completely matter-of-factly…
“What Fuckwhittery is this?”
I laughed so hard I could barely breathe.
Before dessert was over, I had my phone out, logged into my domain registrar, and bought Fuckwhittery.com.
I had absolutely no idea what it would become.
I just knew one day it had to exist.
Sometimes Good Ideas Need Time
Originally, I imagined it as a slightly twisted, definitely-not-PG version of Chicken Soup for the Soul.
A place filled with hilarious stories about the wonderfully ridiculous things that happen to ordinary people.
Then life happened, work happened, multiple moves and family happened. Like so many good ideas, it quietly waited on the shelf. Looking back…I’m glad it did.
Because I don’t think the world needed this website sixteen years ago as much as it needs it now.
Somewhere Along the Way…
I’ve been working in the digital world for almost thirty years.
I’ve watched the internet grow from something that connected people into something that often feels like it’s trying to divide them.
Don’t get me wrong—I love technology. It’s given us incredible opportunities to learn, build businesses, stay in touch with people across the world, and create communities that never could have existed before.
Everything became about likes. Followers. Views. Outrage. Algorithms.
It sometimes feels like we’ve reached a point where everyone is expected to have an opinion about everything, defend it to the death, and assume the worst in anyone who disagrees.
It is F’ing exhausting.
I miss when the internet made us laugh.
Do You Remember These?
I’m probably showing my age here…but remember those photocopied stories?
Someone at work would hand you a crumpled piece of paper and say, “You have to read this.”
By lunchtime half the office had seen it. Then email arrived, and those same stories found a new life.
You’d open your inbox to find a message with the subject line:
“You HAVE to read this!”
It wasn’t breaking news. It wasn’t political. Nobody was trying to sell you anything. In fact anyone 35 and under probably wouldn’t even know what I am talking about, and that is sad. It is sad because of the intention that was behind the share, the genuine desire to connect and laugh with someone. You could catch that person’s eye over the course of the day and hilarity would ensue again.
It was simply a ridiculous story that made somebody laugh so hard they wanted someone else to laugh too.
For five minutes, complete strangers shared exactly the same moment. It wasn’t about agreeing, it was about connection, and finding something that connected you through laughter.
I miss that.
And I think a lot of other people do too.
That’s Why This Exists
I don’t think the world needs another website shouting louder than everyone else.
I think it needs a place where we can remember that we’re all just muddling our way through life together.
Where we can laugh at ourselves. Share the stories that become family legends. Celebrate the beautiful chaos of being human.
If this little corner of the internet can make someone snort coffee through their nose, call their sister to say, “Oh my God… remember when Dad did that?”, or remind them not to take life quite so seriously…
…then I think it’s doing exactly what it was meant to do.
What This Place Is Really About
If you’re looking for somewhere to mock people, you’ve taken a wrong turn.
There’s already enough of that on the internet.
This isn’t about public shaming, political rants, cancel culture, or proving somebody else is an idiot. Frankly, social media has that market covered, and I have no interest in adding to the noise.
What I love are the stories that make you laugh so hard you can’t breathe because, somewhere in the middle of them, you realize…
“Oh God… I’ve done something just like that.”
We’ve all burned dinner.
We’ve all sent the text to the wrong person.
We’ve all started a DIY project with far more confidence than ability.
Every family has that holiday story that gets told every Christmas, and everyone starts laughing before the person telling it even gets to the good part.
Those are the stories worth keeping.
Not because they’re perfect…
…but because they’re real.
They’re the moments that remind us none of us have this life completely figured out, and that’s okay.
In fact, it’s probably the best thing about being human.
Why Me?
I’ve spent almost thirty years building websites and helping people navigate the digital world.
I’ve watched the internet grow into one of the most incredible tools humanity has ever created.
I’ve also watched it become one of the noisiest.
Technology gave us amazing ways to connect.
Somewhere along the line…
it also convinced us that life was something to perform instead of something to live.
That’s Why This Exists
This little corner of the internet is my way of pushing back.
A reminder that…
- We don’t have to be perfect.
- We don’t have to curate every moment.
- We don’t have to pretend we’ve got it all together.
Sometimes the best thing we can do…
…is laugh at ourselves.
Tell the story.
Make someone else smile.
And realize someone, somewhere, has done something just as ridiculous.
Because underneath all the noise…
We’re far more alike than we are different.
And if we can remember how to laugh together again…
I think that’s a pretty good place to start.
